About St. Joseph Seminary St. Joseph Seminary, following the guidance of Pastores Dabo Vobis and The Constitutions of the Society of Saint-Sulpice, is dedicated to the formation of those who are called to the ministerial priesthood of Jesus Christ. This ministry, like that of the episcopate and the diaconate, exists as a service to the communion of the Church. The formation of candidates to the presbyteral ministry consists in preparing priests who will work in collaboration with their Bishops, in the mission which is confided to them. By the Sacrament of Holy Orders, priests are configured to Christ the Priest as servants of the Head, so that as co-workers with the Episcopal order they may build up the Body of Christ, the Church. (Presbyterorum Ordinis 12) “In its deepest identity the Seminary is called to be, in its own way, a continuation in the Church of the apostolic community gathered about Jesus, listening to his word, proceeding toward the Easter experience, awaiting the gift of the Spirit for the mission. Such an identity constitutes the normative ideal which stimulates the Seminary in the many diverse forms and various aspects which it assumes historically as a human institution, to find concrete realization, faithful to the Gospel values from which it takes it inspiration and able to respond to the situation and needs of the times.” (Pastores Dabo Vobis 60) “The Seminary of Saint-Sulpice…has consecrated and dedicated itself to Jesus Christ our Lord not only to honour him as High Priest and as the great Apostle of his Father, but also to respect him living in the Apostolic College. Daily, the Seminary prays for an apostolic spirit for itself and for the whole Church so as to renew in her the love of Jesus Christ and his attitude of religion toward his Father, particularly among the clergy who, as the source of holiness, must then diffuse it among all peoples.” (Jean- Jacques Olier, Founder of the Society of Saint-Sulpice, Various Writings, I, p. 67) Called by the Archbishop of Edmonton, who has associated with himself the other Bishops of Western Canada as its Board of Regents, St. Joseph Seminary pursues its specific mission of training future diocesan priests. |
